🔒 How to Get Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 (Free)

Even though Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 10, you can still get free security updates through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program — and it’s super easy!

This guide shows you exactly how to enroll your device, sign in, and switch back to a local account, with tips if you don’t see the option.

🛠 Step-by-Step: Enable Free Extended Security Updates

Step 1:

Open Windows Update Settings

  • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update

  • Look for a button that says “Enroll Now”

📌 Note: You may find this button in different places:

  • Below the Check for updates button
  • On the right-hand side, especially if you’re also seeing a Windows 11 upgrade prompt
  • Or scroll down, depending on your screen size

Step 2: Click “Enroll Now” or “Add Device”

  • Click “Enroll Now” and choose “Next”

  • You might be asked to sign in with your Microsoft account during the process, especially if you’re not already logged in on that device.
  • If you’ve already enrolled another device, it may say “Add Device” — both are free and work the same

Step 3

  • Finally, Click “Enroll Now” to start the process.

  • Then Click “Done”

  • You’ll see a message saying your device is eligible for security updates until October 13, 2026
  • Your status will also show under Windows Update settings.

If you prefer not to stay signed in with a Microsoft account:

  • Go to Settings → Accounts

  • Click “Stop signing in to all Microsoft apps automatically”

  • This will revert you to a local account, but your “Extended Security Updates enrollment” stays active till October 13, 2026

🚫 Don’t See the “Enroll Now” Option?

Try these:

  • Make sure Windows 10 is fully updated (install all pending updates)

  • Make sure the Windows 10 is activated.

  • Restart your PC

  • Still missing? Try restarting again

Do I Need to Backup to OneDrive?

No. You do not need to back up files to OneDrive to enroll.
You only need to sync your device settings and preferences, which is part of using a Microsoft account.

You can enroll anytime before October 2026, but all free updates will end on October 13, 2026 — no matter when you enroll.

That’s a personal choice — but here’s our take:

While Windows 11 comes with some new design and features, many users (including us!) still prefer the stability and familiarity of Windows 10.
If your device supports Windows 11 and you want to explore the newer experience, go ahead. But if you’re comfortable with Windows 10, these free Extended Security Updates let you stay safe and secure through October 2026 — without rushing to upgrade.
